The Old Van Rensselaer Mansion

Title
The Old Van Rensselaer Mansion
Date
October 1873
Description
The Van Rensselaer Mansion is located on the Hudson River in Albany, NY. A large mansion built upon the Hudson River, it was home to great wealth. Rensselaer family owned land beyond imagination. The original Rensselaer's that came from Holland actually bought Staten Island from the Indians.
Many of the trials and tribulations that Lily Bart, the main character of "House of Mirth", goes through happen at a similar place such as the Van Rensselaer Mansion. Bellomont is placed along the Hudson river outside of the city of Rhinebeck, NY (over half-way between NYC and Albany). Many things like gambling, partying, drinking, and social match-makings take place at Bellomont. After the last heir of Van Rensselaer Mansion died, Williams College in Massachusetts actually dismantled the Mansion and rebuilt it on campus to be Fraternity house. Where I assume many of the same activities took place.
