Description

This is a lithograph painted during the California gold rush of emigrants crossing the lands to reach California. This relates back to The Lamplighter because during the story, we see Gertrude receive a letter from her father, who describes what happened during the California Gold Rush, where many people moved from their homes to California, in order to try and profit on the recent discovery of gold. We see in the lithograph the people moving across the Rocky Mountains, moving to California in order to capitalize on this. The lithograph shows us how these people crossed to their new homeland, bringing everything on covered wagons and hauling it across the United States.
