Description

American Frugal Housewife, written by Lydia Maria Francis Child, is an all things domestic manual as well as an informational book of sorts. It shows how homemakers during this time conducted their home and family life. Although it might seem somewhat backwards to some, the author's background and cut-to-the-chase and no nonsense way of addressing a variety of domestic topics says otherwise. She addresses topics from food recipes to housekeeping and parenting advice.
Lydia Child was an active feminist, Abolitionist who made a life for her family through her writing. As an educated and liberated woman, she emphasized the importance of the role of a homemaker. Many elite and middle class people took great significance in conducting in a certain manner which Child discusses in her book.
The ways in which Emily Graham is raised as well as raises or domesticates Getrude is most likely very similar to Child's instructional book.
