Its purpose was to connect the readers to the goings-on and information in and from India. This selection, among many available, expresses excerpts within this volume from the general time frame in which William “Willie” Sullivan in Cummins’ “The Lamplighter” spent nearly a decade of his time working while in Calcutta. India is the farthest destination named in “The Lamplighter,” and plays a pivotal role in showing not only the global knowledge people possessed at that time, but the importance of location and the work that took place in those settings. The Calcutta Review was written by two men, one of which was a reverend, therefore much of the information enclosed has a religious foundation. However, it also expresses the views in which men in US-America had on “foreign” land and colonization through religion and economics.
