In The Lamplighter, Dr. Jeremy was used to riding on the train because there was never a steamboat, but since there was a new way of travel, he decided to meet up with Dr. Gryesworth. However, later in the novel, the doctors learn that the way of the steamboat was not as safe as this article would describe, and that they would have been much more safe if they had ridden on the railroad like usual. “Thankful were the party when they were safe on the steamboat” (ch.
