The article discusses Washington Street in Boston, which is where certain parts in the book take place. The article also describes how there was an old building that used to be one of the head quarters for a commander-in-chief of England’s colonial troops. The information from this document allows us to paint a picture of what Washington Street looked like in the mid to late 1800s. We get a better idea of where Gertrude was in the book at the same time and place of the document. Washington Street appears on page 136 in the Lamplighter when Gertrude is speaking with Mr. Bruce. Mr. Bruce tells Gertrude how he would have liked to walk down Washington Street with her and she replies, “I did not go down Washington-street.” From their conversation it appears as though Washington Street is one of the main streets in Boston at that time.
