Most of these families where middle class or just poor. The population had went from 193,318 to 44, 477, it had risen 133.20 in 25 years. The source talked about the many families had to share homes but the spaces where not big enough for each family. The inside living conditions where not the only thing that was harsh in Boston at this time, but also the streets, sidewalks, buildings and even air was a bad condition during this time. It really made it hard for most families to live in but they had to make it work to survive, just like Gerty had to make her living situation work in the novel. Most of the population in this source live in rented tenements. A bathroom is consider a necessity to a home, for these middle/poor class citizens a bathroom was not granted to most of them due to the tough living conditions.
