Abel Bowen Date The date the document or image was originally published or created, in YYYY-MM-DD format (see fields guide for further details) June 1, 1833 Description Describe key features of the primary source and how they help to answer the research question at hand (usually the significance of a space or place to a text and/or its author or readers) The author’s, Abel Bowen, main purpose for publishing this particular work was so that he could provide a field guide to the citizen of Boston and to a traveler. His goal was to give the person a complete detail of the city so that he or she can have an idea of what is expected. In his description of the city of Boston and its complex architecture, Bowen provides an idea of what the hotels in the upper class area were like for strangers of the city. Bowen describes the hotels are being spacious and elegant; it contained 70 chamber, an open dining hall, which could accommodate up to 150 persons at table, drawing rooms and private parlors. According to Bowen, the hotels were surrounded by piazzas which brought about cool and refreshing breezes throughout the hotel. On top of the amazing architecture the hotel employees insisted that special accommodations be made to the hotel to fit the customer’s preferences.
