A typical apartment during that time would cost about $30 to $50 to rent with the men having an income of $1,500 to $2,500. There were tens of thousands of apartments already built in New York. These smaller living areas allowed for more and more people to live in New York. In The House of Mirth, Lawrence Selden lived in an apartment complex known as The Benedick. The book describes the building as made of new brick and limestone, marble porches, and pseudo-Georgian façade. Selden lives on the top floor with a balcony.
