In the beginning, the author uses imagery to help the reader understand what the run down hovel looks like. I connected this to Charlotte Temple mainly because it includes a mother and a sick baby. But in the passage, the baby is the one that is sick and the mother is taking care of it. Whereas in Charlotte Temple, Charlotte was ill and then dies shortly after giving birth.
