Description

Much of the travel to India during this time, while having to do with the East India trading company, was also due to the missionary work that was being done by countries like America and England with the intent of spreading the word of God, and by doing so, converting ‘heathen’ Hindi’s to God worshiping Christians.

Much of The Lamplighter holds the notion that God is the leading light for many of the characters, and religion plays a large part in their life. In one specific section, Willie explains to Gerty what praying is and why it is used. Religion was a major part of the lives of people in the 1800s and any missionary work being done around the world would be well known by those very pious people in America, and thus places inhibited by them would be known as more sacred, and thus more civilized, making them more desirable to be visited.

In this biography, Thomas T. Tomason talks about his time in India as a missionary, and how he was able to convert Indian natives to the Christian culture. He talks about the life he lived, and the issues he came across, and how the culture in India was transformed by the work of missionaries. He talked about how India was seen as a more cultures place because of the missionary work. One particular passage mentions how missionaries were members (and instructors) of schools in India, so they could ‘properly; educate the future generations.
