Description
A set of chains and tables at a casino in Monte Carlo. We see Selden in Monte Carlo in the beginning of book 2, and the same with Lily Bart. The cruise ship the Sabrina is also in port here at the beginning of book 2. The picture here depicts a casino in the appropriate time period, which was a major calling card of Monte Carlo, which was an activity Selden and Lily Bart surely were attracted to, as Monte Carlo was famous for being a large gambling area. Monte Carlo also being a “loose” place, and major vacation hub, could contribute to Lily Bart enjoying herself and the “beauty” that surrounded her in the begging of book 2, chapter 2. It also may have helped contribute to Bertha cheating on her husband, which led Bertha to start to lie and manipulate Lily Bart, eventually making her a scapegoat.
